The NCLEX does not use a fixed percentage-correct passing score the way many other exams do. Instead, the exam uses Computer Adaptive Testing (CAT) to compare your demonstrated ability level against a passing standard set by NCSBN, which is reviewed and can be adjusted periodically (approximately every three years) based on entry-level nursing practice analysis. With the Next Generation NCLEX (NGN), case-study and clinical-judgment items are scored using models that can award partial credit on certain item types, adding another layer beyond simple right/wrong scoring. In practice, this means two candidates can answer a different number of questions, see different levels of difficulty, and both pass — because the exam is measuring whether your ability is above the passing standard with 95% statistical confidence, not tallying a raw percentage.
