Coarctation of the aorta is a narrowing of the aorta that restricts blood flow to the lower body. This causes weak or absent femoral pulses and decreased blood pressure in the lower extremities, while upper extremity blood pressure is elevated (hypertension). Nosebleeds and increased intracranial pressure are not typical findings. Upper extremity hypertension (not hypotension) is the classic finding above the coarctation.
