IV fluids are expected to maintain hydration and support the child for surgery. Antibiotics are expected to treat or prevent infection associated with appendicitis. A heating pad is contraindicated because heat increases circulation to the area and can accelerate perforation of the appendix. A regular diet is inappropriate — the child must be NPO (nothing by mouth) in preparation for surgery.
