    Addison's disease, or primary adrenal insufficiency, occurs when the adrenal cortex is progressively destroyed — most often by autoimmune attack, but also by infection, hemorrhage or metastatic disease — and can no longer produce adequate cortisol and aldosterone. Because both major corticosteroid hormones are lost, the disease affects glucose regulation, stress response, blood pressure, and sodium and potassium balance simultaneously.

    Symptoms develop insidiously: fatigue, weight loss, low blood pressure, salt craving and a characteristic bronze hyperpigmentation caused by excess ACTH stimulating melanocytes.
